ORGANIC DESIGNATION
Traditional agriculture has undergone a significant production intensification process over recent years that, although leading to a relative improvement in the quality of life of its farmers, has also meant other consequences such as damage to the environment, the disappearance of genetic resources, excessive consumption of non-renewable energies and the marked dependence of farmers on their means of production, etc. Society is not unaware of this problem and shows its concern for food safety, the depletion of resources and damage to the environment.
The need arose for the start and maintaining of agriculture capable of guaranteeing environmental preservation, increasing soil fertility and providing food with all its natural properties. This explains the great rise and development of organic agriculture over recent years, although this production model is not a new one and can be dated back to the first half of the 20th Century. Extremadura has 26 preparation, processing and packaging industries for products involving organic agriculture and boats the largest area devoted to organic farming production in Spain with 173019 hectares. However, its weakness is currently the marketing of these products, which are awaiting the opening up of their markets abroad.
