A SHORT HISTORY

It is most likely that the Baños de San Gregorio (Saint Gregory Baths) – as the Spa was know for years – have their origin, as is the case with other Spas, in the Roman period. That this should be the case may be deduced from the discoveries made in one of the corners of the foundations of the old building when it was extended and refurbished decades ago.

In spite of the medicinal use and utility of the waters throughout the preceding centuries, the sorry state of the installations meant that they had to be refurbished on various occasions, the most worthy of mention being the work paid for by Don Cipriano Cabrera, a Brozas priest who bequeathed the amount of 20,000 “reales”, to repair the Chapel of San Gregorio and to construct a house with covered baths for the use, enjoyment and shelter of those who came to these medicinal waters in search of health – their fame spread even beyond the Portuguese border. Later efforts to improve the spring would result in an increase in the water flow and the separation of medicinal water for drinking and for bathing.

The buildings of the Brozas Spa bear no resemblance to the original buildings which once stood on this same site and in fact ever since the year 2000 they offer modern accommodation with rooms with a view, a Restaurant and a Cafeteria. Add to this the thermal areas which have been well extended and equipped with modern treatment facilities and the beautiful surrounding gardens, outside terraces and a typical Extremaduran setting in which sweeping forests of oak are predominant, home to birds of prey, a multitude of storks and other feathered creatures.

The centre offers thermal and oxygen baths situated on the lower floor of the main building which is also where the doctor’s surgery is to be found. The upper floor is set aside for clients in search of health and rest, sonic aerosols and moist inhalations as well as parafangos, paraffin and pressotherapy. Also on the upper floor are terraces which bathers may use as a solarium or just to relax – there are beautiful views of the surrounding landscape – and other rooms where massages are given.

Beside the main building stands the Chapel of San Gregorio which for centuries has lent its name to the thermal centre. Now magnificently restored, in days gone by it welcomed within its walls the sick who came to “take the waters”.

Also worthy of mention, without any doubt whatsoever, are the commendable efforts carried out in recent years by the Town Hall of Brozas. Their objective is to develop a Spa just as convivial as the present one and they plan to carry out improvements to the installations and the thermal facilities.

THE WATERS

The spring has its source in the interior of the thermal centre. Barely a metre deep, the spring waters are channelled towards a cistern for distribution. Chemical analyses of these waters show an abundance of bicarbonate, sodium, chloride, calcium, sulphate, magnesium etc. which results in their being classified as rich in cold sulphide and sodium bicarbonate chloride.
