Location and access
The Jerte Valley Hotel Spa is situated in the municipality of Valdastillas, at kilometre 383 of the national N-110 road. The surface area is approximately 100,000 square metres, used entirely as a hotel-spa. The project was located in the middle of the Jerte Valley in response both to the needs of the zone and to the increasing national and international popularity of the Jerte Valley.
The “Valle del Jerte” Hotel Spa is becoming a point of reference on account of the growing tendency towards health tourism, the greater number of young people demanding beauty and relaxation facilities, an ageing populace and its own privileged situation which it owes both to its geographical proximity to the capital of Spain and to the potential of this area which today is undergoing a major process of expansion.
In this estate there is a spring of sulphurous water, easily recognised by its smell of rotten eggs. Down through the years it has been known by such names as "Fuente Salada”, “Fuente del Salobral”, and the present day “Baños de la Guarrapa”. It is well known on account of its therapeutic usefulness and there are written references dating back to the end of the 18th century which stand testimony to its existence and its rich mineral-medicinal properties. Recent investigations corroborate that fact: Haba Quirós and Rodrigo López (1991), Barrientos Alfajeme (1991), Flores del Manzano (1997) and Alcalde Molero (2000). As a point of historic curiosity we may quote the historian José Orlandis who, in his book “Life in Spain in the days of the Goths”, talks of the “Villa Gérticos” estate on the banks of the Jerte River as being where Recesvinto, King of the Goths died and where there was a spring of thermal water.
From 1925 to 1975 the Calle Family from the town of El Torno exploited the spring although rather than a business as such, what they did was attend to the needs of folk from the valley and from the neighbouring areas of La Vera and Avila, drawn here by the water’s effect on skin and the locomotor apparatus. However the conditions they worked in were very deficient, as was the way in which the waters were applied.
This area’s waters are identified by their ions as containing “sulphur, fluoride, sodium chloride bicarbonate” by the Chair of Medical Hydrology of Madrid’s Complutense University and are classified as mineral-medicinal by the Directorate General for Minas of the Extremadura Council.
