  • Located in the north of Badajoz province, this reservoir is one of the most important wetlands in Extremadura and an ideal place for bathing, water sports and bird watching.

Located in Badajoz province, close to the municipality of Orellana la Vieja, after which it is named, Orellana Reservoir is one of the few wetlands in Extremadura that are included on the list of wetlands classed as being of international importance. This reservoir, which is fed by the Guadiana river, was built as part of the Badajoz Action Plan and has a spectacular bathing area known as "Costa Dulce", where you can also enjoy water sports. Orellana boasts the only inland beach in all Spain to be awarded the Blue Flag.

The reservoir is also very popular for bird watching. Together with the nearby Sierra de Pela mountains, it forms a Special Protection Areas for Birds (SPA). It is home to many species of birds, including griffon vultures, golden eagles, hen harriers, Montagu's harriers and black storks. It also has lots of other wildlife, such as otters, badgers and natterjack toads.

The shores of the reservoir touch the municipal areas of Orellana la Vieja, Orellana de la Sierra, Acedera, Navalvillar de Pela, Casas de Don Pedro, Talarrubias, Puebla de Alcocer, Esparragosa de Lares and Campanario.
