This reservoir also forms part of the archaeological ensemble of Mérida, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known locally as "the pond".

Over the centuries, it has been remodelled several times, but it is still used for bathing today. It has a man-made beach, outdoor cafés and a water museum.
