Nature and gastronomy

  • Follow the ham route and take part in the history of the black Iberian pig in extraordinary natural surroundings.

This route includes the districts of the south of Badajoz where the prominence of the Iberian ham is shared with nature, represented here especially by the Extremadura dehesa. So if you wish to combine gastronomy and nature, your choice should be the Sierras de Badajoz Ham Route. This is without doubt the ideal choice to discover a world of Iberian sensations, visiting drying sheds and tasting combined with trekking and, why not, cycle touring in the vast Extremadura dehesa.

The Sierras de Badajoz Route covers 33 municipalities in the districts of the south of Badajoz: Sierra Suroeste, Tentudía and Campiña Sur.

Setting out from Azuaga, the road takes you to Fregenal de la Sierra, Fuentes de León, Higuera la Real, Jerez de los Caballeros, Llerena, Monesterio, Montemolín, Oliva de la Frontera and Valencia del Mombuey, amongst other places.

Remember that Jerez de los Caballeros and Monesterio also respectively hold two of the most prominent fairs in the world of Iberian ham: the Iberian Ham Fair and Ham Day, the latter declared Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura. They are well worth attending if you happen to be in the area, as the activities include competitions such as the art of carving ham.

And if you are visiting in March, the slaughtering class in Llerena is a special event concerning the sacrifice of the pig.

The hams of Fregenal de la Sierra are the best on the route, as they are produced by ground-breaking methods which still respect tradition. Not in vain have the Fregenal Iberian hams rightfully earned the seal of "Dehesa de Extremadura" Designation of Origin.
