  • A Festivity of National Tourist Interest that adorns the streets of Badajoz with some of the most beautiful samples of Christian imagery in existence.

The origins of the Badajoz Holy Week celebrations date back to the 16th century, during which time a number of images and works have been collected that go to make up a historical and artistic heritage of unquestioned value.

A lot of brotherhoods go on processions around the streets and squares of the city of Badajoz during the Week of Passion. Particularly noteworthy is the procession of the different statues near the Cathedral, providing locals and visitors alike with an excellent opportunity to admire the quality and worth of some of the works that have been crafted by the most renowned makers of religious images.

A solemn, religious moment to which must be added the procession of the "Virgen de la Soledad" (Virgin of Solitude) on Holy Thursday. Without a doubt the moment the people of Badajoz most look forward to is when the patroness of Badajoz is taken out from her shrine and carried in procession around the Plaza de la Soledad square. A place where some brotherhoods march in procession who also enjoy moments of magic on the entry and exit of their images into and out of churches and convents.

The taking out of several stations of penance in the early morning of Holy Wednesday and Holy Thursday is another of the magic moments of the Badajoz Holy Week, where silence and devotion take possession of the night and the beautiful spots around which the processions march.
