One of the most ancient routes in Spain

  • Relive the path which the Al-Andalus Christians took on their journey to Santiago de Compostela to see the Apostle.

The Mozarabic Way was born of the necessity of the Christians inhabiting Moslem-dominated Al-Andalus to make a pilgrimage to Santiago. This is possibly one of the most ancient pilgrims' ways existing in the Peninsula.

The journey commences in Andalusia and, once you have crossed Cordoba, you then begin the Extremadura stage.

The point of arrival is the district of La Serena. Monterrubio de la Serena, Campanario and Castuera are just some of the towns the pilgrim passes through before arriving in Don Benito. The Church of Santiago and the ethnographic museum make this city attractive to the tourist.

After Don Benito you come to Medellín. The Guadiana River is the witness to the history which you breathe here. Medellín has an archaeological site of great importance, with remains from a number of periods, the highlight being the Roman theatre.

Our path continues. Torrefresneda, San Pedro de Mérida and Trujillanos lead us to Mérida where the Mozarabic Way ends, joins up with the Silver Way and continues its journey to Santiago.
