How to get to

  • Its cultural heritage brings home to us the importance of this place since pre-historic times.

Ensconced in the Sierra de San Pedro mountains, from the Badajoz town of Alburquerque you can look out onto Portugal, while at the same time enjoying the mountainous surroundings and large meadows of holm oak of this magnificent area, most of which is a protected natural space.

Founded during the Moorish presence in the area, it's origin may even go as far back as Roman times. Nonetheless, its most characteristic monuments date back to the Middle Ages, as you will not doubt find as you stroll around the centre of the town, which is presided over by Luna castle, the wall that surrounds the Gothic-Jewish quarter, the town gate and the Valencia gate.

To these must be added emblematic buildings of a religious nature, which further attest to the marvellous cultural and architectural heritage of Alburquerque, such as the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Carrión, the church of San Mateo, the church of San Francisco, the convent of Madre de Dios and the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. Moreover, in the surrounding area of the town you can complete your stroll by going to see the Bronze Age cave paintings declared to be a national monument in 1942.

The fact is, the past has left an indelible mark on Alburquerque as you will discover through its present-day traditions by way of its fiestas, such as the procession of the Virgen de Carrión, the Villa de Alburquerque Medieval Festival, declared to be a Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura, Holy Week, the cattle fair and the Indie-pop Contemporary Music Festival.
