How to get to

  • This Cáceres town is made up of different cultures but one race that has made a particular mark on it are the Arabs, whom it even gets its name from.

In the centre of Extremadura, near the border with the province of Badajoz, is the Cáceres town of Alcuéscar. Located between the mountains of Centinela and La Lombriz, almost touching the mountains of Montánchez and San Pedro, this town was founded in the year 830 by the Muslims and later passed into hands of the Christians and was repopulated with Arabs, who gave it its name.

If you would like to find out a little more about its history, all you have to do is visit the church of Santa Lucía del Trampal, a Visigothic temple from the 7th century, which also has an interpretation centre where you will find answers to all of the questions that occur to you during your visit. Likewise, you shouldn't miss a trip to the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the shrines of La Virgen de Fátima and San Isidro, and the chapel in El Cruce de las Herrerías.

But your journey doesn't end here as you also have the chance of getting closer to the architectural beauty of this Cáceres town through its stately manors, built by the families of the farming bourgeoisie of Alcuéscar. If you're wondering what the best date is for coming to this historic enclave, the best time is during one of its festivities, such as La Jira, the Cruz de Mayo, the Fiesta del Emigrante (Emigrant's Fair), La Virgen del Rosario or La Chaquetía.
