Location and Contact:

  • There are several Roman ruins dotted around the environs of this Cáceres town.

Numerous ruins of hill forts and Roman villas, not to mention several tomb inscriptions in the surrounding area, attest to its Roman past. Nonetheless, its name may come from the existence of a "venta" (country inn) called Venta del Cano, which provided accommodation for pilgrims on the Silver Way.

The place is steeped in history, as exemplified by its parish church of San Martín, the chapel to the Virgen de los Remedios, the Mayoralgo castle, the Angelita Llorens convent, the old Civil Guard barracks, the Excelentísimos Marqueses Martín Borrego palace and the Silver Route itself.

The cultural wealth of the town is also reflected in its traditional festivities, such as the procession and fiestas in honour of the Virgen de los Remedios and of San Martín. Not to mention its customs: the burning of the "tuero" holm oak trunk on 24 December, which was selected by the "Quintos" in August, the Virgen de Fátima procession, the Calvary cake and the palm procession.
