Nature and history come together in this town situated on the border between Badajoz and Cáceres.
This municipality in Badajoz dates back to the times of Al-Andalus, as it already existed as a village. After being conquered by the Christians it joined the lands of Mérida.
Historic elements include the late Gothic Parish Church of San Andrés Apóstol. Its west façade is interesting because it boasts a beautiful inscription along the archivolts. You shouldn't forget that this old village is on the Roman Silver Route, which later on became the southern pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
But this is not the only attraction in Aljucén – you can discover its traditions at its festivals, like the Emigrante, patron saint's festivities (San Andrés), the "romería" (pilgrimage), and the "romería de la confraternidad" (fraternity pilgrimage). You can finish your journey through history at the Cornalvo Nature Reserve, which is next to the town. -
