On top of an outcrop from which Cabeza de Buey can be controlled, we find the ruins of what was a great fortress: Almorchón castle.
In the town of Cabeza de Buey, less than 2 kilometres from the town of Almorchón, we find this fortress, which was built by the Moslems and later passed into the hands of the Knights Templar, who transformed it into a powerful castle. Later, the Order of Alcántara built over its walls again, giving it the appearance that we know today.
The castle is built in a strategic place, so that nobody could attack or enter it without being seen by its inhabitants. Behind its small walls, there were three cylindrical towers and a pentagonal one: the keep.
Besides these typical buildings, the castle had lodgings with chimneys and windows, a well and a chapel of which nothing remains nowadays. -
