Arroyo de la Luz

This town, located on in the Cáceres district of Tajo-Salor, is Lusitanian (ancient Portuguese) in origin, as testified to by the numerous tombs excavated in rock and the tombstones found in the area. Its was originally settled by Lusitanians, followed by Celts and later by Romans, Visigoths and Moors, who abandoned upon the Christian reconquest. The passage of these people's is amply attested to by the archaeological remains found nearby in the Dehesa de la Luz, among which traces of Iberian and Visigothic cultures were discovered, as were anthropomorphic tombs.

Its history is also attested to by the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción with its Luis de Morales altarpiece, its jurisdictional stone column, the Herrera castle, the convent of San Francisco, the chapel of San Antonio Abad, the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Luz and the Counts of Benavente palace. Its traditional fiestas are held in August and September with the processions of San Pedrino and the Virgin, the descent of the Virgin into the town; not to mention its well known Day of Light, with its horse races: a fiesta that has been declared a Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.

Moreover, you can't visit Arroyo without savouring some of its traditional dishes, especially cabbage with "buche" (pork ribs in pig stomach cured like chorizo etc.) and "escabechera", stewed kid, stews, "torrijas" (puddings), cinnamon flavoured custard, "perrunillas" biscuits and the famous "tortas de la luz" cakes.
