A land of contrasts

  • This municipality in Badajoz is steeped in history, so you'll be able to discover for yourself how the past has shaped this unique area in Extremadura.

The remains of the first settlements date back to prehistoric times: for example, there are two important petroglyphs in the farm of “Gamitas” and in “Barrancos”. Many pre-Roman implements have been discovered close to the town.

As you can see, one of the main attractions in this municipality is its rich history. There are also archaeological sites such as La Mata, the El Herrador petroglyph, found in the farm of the same name; and many signs of romanisation, like the Paredón dam, and graves dug out of rock. But the name of Campanario does not appear until 1333. It refers to its dry lands and rich metallurgy.

If you go for a walk along the streets, don't miss the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, the Shrine of Nuestra Señora de Piedraescrita, the Shrine of Los Mártires, the Convent of the Discalced Franciscans, the Convent and Church of the Order of St Clare, the stately homes and the so-called Casa de los Diablos.

But Campanario is much more than that, as you'll be able to see if you come to the Piedraescrita pilgrimage, designated a Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura, which takes place on Easter Monday in honour of the town's patron saint, the Virgin of Piedraescrita.
