This Special Protection Area for Birds is home to a large number of water birds, listed as a site of international importance, as well as a refuge for the anaecypris hispanica (jarabugo), an endangered species of fish.
In the Badajoz district of La Campiña Sur, nestled between the towns of Llerena, Peraleda del Zaucejo, Valencia de las Torres and Maguilla, lies the Campiña Sur-Embalse de Arroyo Conejos Special Protection Area for Birds, which encompasses the reservoirs of Arroyo Conejos and El Rosal.
These wetlands are home to numerous aquatic birdlife, regarded as being of international importance according to the criteria of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. They are made up of dehesa pastures populated by oaks and holm oaks as well as dense areas of cork forest. This natural setting is an ideal habitat for the European pond turtle, the Mediterranean pond terrapin and otters, as well as the anaecypris hispanica (jarabugo), an endangered species of fish.
The many species of birds include colonies of gull-billed terns, collared pratincoles and the endangered black tern, along with winter flocks of common cranes.
To learn all about the area's natural wealth and biodiversity, you can visit the interpretation centre, where you'll be able to enjoy different activities on the reservoir. It is necessary to book in advance. The centre is located between Higuera de Llerena and Berlanga, close to the dam. -
