  • This Tartessian monumental sanctuary has been preserved to the present in an exceptional state of repair.

Cancho Roano lies on flat terrain in the region of La Serena, and belongs to the town of Zalamea de la Serena, in the province of Badajoz. A site that dates back to the 5th century BC, comprised of three buildings, beside which the river Cagancha runs, the main feature of the place and the reason why the monument was built.

The main building, called the sanctuary-palace of Cancho Roano, faces east and is comprised of eleven rooms and a large courtyard which gives the layout a "U"-shape. A well was built on the inside which still has an acceptable level of water today.

The rooms that surround the building have been identified as chapels or the place where the offerings to the shrine were placed. It has survived to the present in an extremely good state of preservation and many objects of worship and various typical elements of the age have been found in it.

A ditch dug out of the rock surrounds the monumental complex, filled with the water that runs by the site and where several objects of historical value were also found.

The Cancho Roano interpretation centre stands exactly opposite the monument, and in it you can find all the information on the monument from a didactic, entertaining, participative and sensitization perspective, and also discover the secrets the archaeological site conceals.
