This Mérida festival has grown considerably in recent years thanks to the tireless work of local carnival groups, singers, passacaglia, and others.
The carnival groups, some of which have been in existence for over 30 years, are among the differentiating elements of the Roman carnival. The festival starts with the semifinals of the adult group competitions at the Conference Hall for associations, singers, quartets, and choirs; a youth group competition and another for children are also organised. The numerous groups participating are not only from Mérida and the surrounding area but even from other provinces.
During the Roman carnival, Mérida holds many events such as the ‘Tomás Bravo’ National Drag Queen Competition, the Regional Drumming and Percussion Competition, the passacaglia, live music, the Carnival Tapas Route, and the Sunday of the ‘Adas’ when the associations offer chocolate, canapés, sausages, paella, gazpacho, and other gastronomic samples, without forgetting the traditional festival of the Burial of the Sardine.
