Archaeological ruins where we can see a temple that is characteristic of early Christian times. A journey through religious history.
A few kilometres from the city of Mérida, off the beaten tourist track, we find the ruins of the early Christian basilica Casa Herrera - a real archaeological treasure.
Only one floor now remains, but the visitor can imagine what the temple was like. The first thing you notice is the large size of it. It is known to have had two apses and two altars, located in the central nave, one in front of the other. One of its most unusual elements, as there are not many on the Peninsula, is its christening font: a small and narrow font, typical of early Christian times.
Numerous decorative fragments, inscriptions on graves and sarcophagi were found at the temple. -
