This natural site consists of a group of 17 monumental chestnut trees and a gall oak in the Castañar de Ibor district.
Two of the most famous chestnut trees at this site are “El Postuero” and “El Hueco”. Some of these trees are 17 metres tall. And if you follow where they lead, they will take you along a path of ferns to the Calabazas waterfall, with its unique views. As well as chestnuts, this woodland is also home to oak, cork oak and hollyoak trees, together with juniper and Portuguese Laurel (Prunus Lusitanica), a rare survivor of the age of the dinosaurs and endemic to the Las Villuercas region. These chestnut trees are over 500 years old, and have been declared Unique Trees of Extremadura.
It is very easy to get to these ancient trees and the path is suitable for any visitor, irrespective of their age. And whilst you are visiting, you may also spot some of the animals that live in these hills: deer, mouflon goats, roe deer and wild boar.
