  • With the passage of time the first fortress in the town of Valverde de la Vera in Cáceres was incorporated into the church which was built, which gave rise to a new castle.

The primitive fortress over which the castle was built stands in the town of Valverde de la Vera in Cáceres and has been declared a national historical and artistic heritage site. It dates from the 14th century and was built by the Monroy dynasty. Some of the original architectural elements, such as the parish church of Santa María de Fuentes Claras, have been preserved.

During the second half of the 14th century the castle was refurbished several times under the ownership of the Condado de Nieva. That was when the current church was built. It consists of three towers and a ribbed vault. In this way the fortress disappeared altogether as it merged with this temple, so a new castle was built next to it, to the Northwest. The latter comprises a large keep in the centre, with a square enclosure and towers above the corners which can still be seen although largely deteriorated.
