This fortress, which was devastated during a battle with the Portuguese, stands on the highest point of Villanueva del Fresno.
Northwest of the village of Villanueva del Fresno in the province of Badajoz stands this castle with the same name, in the highest point in the area. It was built in the 14th century as the Portocarrero estate, and was annihilated by the Portuguese. It had a rectangular structure and was divided up into two storeys, surrounded by a rampart and a moat. Although only some remains of this concrete fortress are left, some parts are still preserved, like a three-metre-tall rampart and a main wall standing seven metres high.
