You will certainly find the altarpiece of the high altar interesting. It is by the Portuguese sculptor Francisco Morato.
The construction of the church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles was begun at the end of the 15th century, but building work went on until the first third of the 17th century. It would appear that it was originally covered by Gothic vaults which disappeared with the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. Years later the barrel vault which you see today was built.
There are three access doors to this single nave temple with thick masonry walls. Over the first and most important of these, consisting of a segmental arch built out of white stones similar to marble, like the door jambs and the entablature, you will find reliefs of knights and saints, and in the upper niche, an image of the Virgin crowned by the angles.
The tower is in Mudejar style, built completely of brick, except for the base and some corners which were made of stone. It has a quadrangular base and consists of four well differentiated bodies.
In the interior, the main chapel or apse is covered by ribbed vaults of ten cells, following a model used in all of Lower Extremadura, whilst the choir is supported by an elegant segmental arch in granite. There you will find a splendid altarpiece from the early 16th century.
The Rococo organ is also worth mentioning, as is the grill on the chapel of the Judge of Tudía, Juan Riero. But the most lavish piece kept in the church is the parochial silver cross, the cross of Bienvenida. -
