The great height of the tower that presides over this church in Jerez de los Caballeros is the big attraction of this Baroque building.
The church of Santa Catalina, in the municipality of Jerez de los Caballeros in Badajoz province, dates back to the 15th century. It is a Gothic building although its façade is in Baroque style and the tower reveals a more Classicist style, as it dates back to the second half of the 18th century. Its height is in excess of seventy metres, and it is topped by a weather vane representing the image of the saint the church owes its name to.
On entering this church you will realise that its floor plan is rectangular and it has a nave with a ribbed vault. On the inside the most remarkable element is the main altarpiece, which shows an image of Saint Catherine in polychrome wood, and an 18th-century Baroque monstrance, a donation from Charles II. The main altarpiece is also a Baroque piece comprised of two sections supported by Solomonic columns and finished by a huge carved shell.
