Two towers frame this church, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
If you are spending a few days in Trujillo, you simply must visit the church of Santa María la Mayor, as it has been the town's most important religious building for over 700 years and is seen as the second most-important parish church in the diocese of Plasencia, after the Santa Iglesia Cathedral, of course, in the image and likeness of which the Romanesque church was built on which Santa María la Mayor was subsequently erected. Only the eastern tower called the Julia tower remains of this original church, and the transept, where the Cistercian influence is revealed.
A central nave and two side naves were added to the transept in the 14th century. The central one is the highest. In the early 16th century, the new ribbed vaults, the new tower and the baptistery were commissioned.
On the inside, the paintings of the main altarpiece are extremely beautiful, created in around 1490 by the masters Fernando Gallego and Bartolomé, using miscellaneous techniques and styles where one can discern the Germans, Flemish and Castilians. Your attention will also be drawn to the rich funerary chapels of the nobles of Trujillo.
