On your tour of Mérida you can include a visit to this 15th-century building which now houses the presidency of the government of Extremadura.
The Conventual Santiaguista is in the very heart of the capital of the autonomous community, in the well-known Plaza del Rastro, next to the Plaza de España. This building, which now houses the Presidency of the Government of Extremadura, was originally built as the residence of the priory of the Order of Santiago, after Mérida was brought under its jurisdication in 1230. It was built on one of the corners of the town's Arab alcazaba.
The Conventual is comprised of the keep and the adjoining church. The former is a two-storey rectangle, built using granite ashlars with an opening at the top. The latter is made of masonry with ashlars at the corners, and also has two storeys. If you have the chance to visit it (visits are restricted and it is only opened on certain occasions), don't forget to pass by the cloister, comprised of two floors with semicircular arches most of which are supported by plain columns with a simple base and Ionic capital.
