In the last foothills of the Sierra Morena mountains, and almost in Andalusia, Fuentes de León offers travellers some attractive panoramas.
At considerable height and built on wetland surrounded by thriving vegetation and large areas of dehesa pastureland, you will discover a unique landscape that will steal your heart. You will find the traces of man in this remote place hanging from the mountains that has been home to many peoples.
The most ancient remains are at the nearby Neolithic Las Cuevas de Fuentes de León Natural Monument. Evidence has also been found of Celtic and, of course, Roman settlement. Most of the Roman villas near Fuentes de León date from the 3rd and 4th centuries, although little remains of these.
The remains of Cuerno castle, also located within the area of the Natural Monument, bear witness to a Muslim presence. The current town can trace its roots back to the Middle Ages, when it became the stronghold of the Order of Santiago and, subsequently, the Order of the Temple.
The landscape of this natural stronghold of olives, acorns and pastureland leads you to the Cuevas de Fuente de León Natural Monument. In an area of karst geology, the main attraction of these caves are their stalactites, stalagmites and limestone formations sculpted by water over the millennia. This extraordinary Natural Monument consists of five caves that will leave you open mouthed: the Cueva de Los Postes, the Cueva del Agua, the Cueva de Masero, the Cueva del Caballo and the Cueva de Lamparilla caves. Even if speleology does not appeal to you, come and enjoy what nature has to offer.
