Always at the forefront of performing arts in Spain.
The Cáceres Gran Teatro Consortium was established in March 1903, to lay the foundations for a project that aimed to meet the needs of a place that promoted culture, in keeping with the times and the increasing demand of society at the time. Situated in the city centre, on Calle de San Antón, the current Gran Teatro theatre building was built in 1926 and reopened in 1992, after a complete renovation.
As you will see, this special theatre suffered the difficulties and conflicts that took place over the years, including the most important one, the Civil War. After being occupied by soldiers and not being used as a theatre for some time, the Cáceres Gran Teatro opened its doors again with the best shows. It featured important artists such as Estrellita Castro, Pastora Imperio, Concha Piquer, Antonio Machín, Manolo Escobar, Lola Flores, etc.
Today hundreds of plays are performed on the stage.
If you prefer more classical theatre, you can come to the Classical Theatre Festival in June, and discover the essence of drama, both Spanish and international. Masterpieces by important playwrights such as Calderón de la Barca, Cervantes and Lope de Vega can be seen at the festival, which lasts a few days, as well as versions and new ways of interpreting many classics.
Don't think twice and combine theatre and culture in the beautiful city of Cáceres.
