Valencia de Alcántara reenacts the royal wedding between the Infanta Isabella, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, and the king of Portugal, Dom Manuel.
The Cáceres town of Valencia De Alcántara is decked out every summer to recall an historical event: the wedding held in 1497 between the Infanta Isabella, eldest daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, and the Portuguese king Dom Manuel "The Fortunate", a great promoter of the Portuguese discoveries in Brazil, Africa and Asia. This wedding joined, albeit for a short period of time, the kingdoms of Castile, Aragon and Portugal.
For a few days Valencia De Alcántara goes back in time to the Middle Ages as it hosts the reenactment of the Royal Wedding, declared of Tourist Interest in Extremadura. With the participation of people from Extremadura and Portugal, medieval daily life is revived in every street of the Gothic-Jewish quarter. This date reaches its high point with the reenactment of the royal wedding in the Church of Our Lady of Rocamador, an Historic-Artistic National Monument.
All over the town you will find craft markets, theatre performances, parades, witches’ covens, court dancing, medieval tapas and musical performances. The procession of the royal retinue to the Plaza de la Constitución takes place amidst an exhilarating atmosphere and, before you know it, you will be caught up in the history and streets of this border town.
