  • Today, these former iron mines have become an ideal refuge for the area's wildlife and vegetation.

Located in the southeast of Badajoz province within the municipality of Fuente del Arco, the La Jayona mine reached its heyday at the beginning of the 20th century until being shutdown in 1921. Over the years, a microclimate has formed there, within a typically Mediterranean setting, namely the Sierra de La Jayona mountains.

When the mine was abandoned, local wildlife soon moved in and it is now home to many species of reptiles and amphibians, birds such as eagle owls and black storks as well as mammals, including a colony of bats.

But this natural monument's main attraction is undoubtedly its geology as the La Jayona mine has a large fault mirror, which you can see from various levels, along with folds, iron mineralization and karst stalactites.

This is complimented by its spectacular shafts, galleries and mining structures, as well as the sound and light shows that occur during all seasons of the year.

This natural treasure trove is well worth visiting. It is a unique site, the only iron mine in all of Badajoz province, and a spectacular geological and historical monument.
