Segura de León holds fiestas in honour of its patrons in September, combining religious tradition with bullfighting events.
Locals of the Badajoz town of Segura de León render homage to Cristo de la Reja (Christ of the Rail), in honour of whom they hold “las capeas” (bullfights with young bulls) in the town, an event which has been declared to be a Festivity of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.
This is a fiesta in which complete respect is shown for the animals, given that it is expressly prohibited to do them any harm. Moreover, the animals are returned to their pastures as soon as the bullfights are finished.
This tradition has a long history, though it has still managed to preserve in our day the essence that originally gave rise to its celebration. This essence involves the participation of the whole town, as well as the large number of visitors that travel to Segura de León to experience this emotion-charged spectacle in first person. -
