El Torno is home to this monument dedicated to the forgotten victims of the Civil War and the dictatorship.
The naked statues of three men and a woman form the Mirador de la Memoria, a viewpoint located 2km from El Torno and inaugurated on 24 January 2009.
The life-sized statues were commissioned by the Asociación Comarcal de Jóvenes del Valle del Jerte to the sculptor Francisco Cedenilla Carrasco and are dedicated to the forgotten victims of the Civil War and the dictatorship.
The location on the CC-51 motorway is unexpectedly symbolic and beautiful, with spectacular views of the Sierra de Tormantos and the Jerte Valley from a magnificent spot. It is without doubt a splendid location for a photo and to take in the views of the landscape. It can also be visited all year round.
Just hours after being inaugurated, the monument was the victim of an act of vandalism; someone shot at the figures of the three men. The sculptor, when consulted on what to do, said he preferred not to repair the bullet holes because, in his opinion, it gave even more meaning to the homage of the Mirador de la Memoria to the forgotten.
On a curious note, these sculptures appear in the documentary film The Silence of Others, winner of the Goya award for Best Documentary and the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlinale (Germany) in 2018.
The Jerte Valley has plenty of options for enjoying nature and gastronomy. Take a walk on the banks of the river Jerte, enjoy active tourism by exploring the roads to access incredible waterfalls, savour the local products and immerse yourself in the culture of the cherry any time of year. Nearby you also have Plasencia, La Vera, the Ambroz Valley and Monfragüe (National Park and Biosphere Reserve).
