Monasterio is in the south of Badajoz province. It belongs to the Tentudía region, studded with ancient holm and cork oaks, and is very close to the Sierra Morena mountains on the border of Extremadura with Andalusia. This region offers you stunning landscapes full of history, legend and untamed nature.

And it is part of one of the most important routes in Antiquity, the Vía de la Plata, or Silver Route.

In the Roman period, Monesterio was the gateway to Extremadura from the south, with the town's history dating back to its founding by the Templars.

Although this town is most famous for the road that passes through it, it also has a lot of places worth visiting. Its heritage includes the 16th century parish church of San Pedro Apóstol, which has now been restored.

Monesterio is the perfect place to find out everything you ever wanted to know about cured Iberian ham. It has a Museum of Ham dedicated to this famous product that is so closely identified with the town, and Extremadura in general. Visitors to the Museum find out more about the Tentudía region, the Iberian pig, the customs and rituals associated with the "matanza", when the pig is killed, and the virtues that set this product apart from all others. The museum explains the importance of this product for the area and the entire production process.

And if you visit in early September, you will be in time for the Day of Ham, which has been declared a Fiesta of Tourist Interest in Extremadura.
