  • The many and diverse ecosystems that make up the Monfragüe Y Las Dehesas Del Entorno Special Protection Area for Birds have given rise to a wide variety of wildlife in this protected area of Cáceres, the second largest in Extremadura.

Located in the north of Cáceres province, where the Tiétar and Tagus rivers meet, the Monfragüe Y Las Dehesas Del Entorno Special Protection Area for Birds comprises a series of mountains, a continuation of Las Villuercas, and has two reservoirs: Torrejón-Tiétar and Torrejón-Tajo. It boasts a surface area of over 116,000 hectares, making it the second largest protected area in Extremadura and one of the most varied in terms of habitats.

Half of the protected area is made up of Mediterranean woodlands filled with trees of the oak family, though its landscapes also include eucalyptus forests, ash trees, junipers, oleander, tagasaste, rushes and rocky areas. Such diverse ecosystems are home to five species of fish, two species of turtles and various mammals, such as the Iberian lynx, as well as several kind of bats.
