  • In the old prison in Badajoz, this museum houses a collection of contemporary Spanish, Portuguese and Ibero-American art.

The rooms at the Extremadura and Ibero-American Museum of Contemporary Art (MEIAC) houses the works of contemporary artists from Spain, Portugal and Ibero-America. This museum, which opened in 1995, holds around 1,500 works and is located on the site of the old preventative and correctional prison in Badajoz.

The only part of the original architectural ensemble that has been preserved is the central building, perhaps the most representative due to its cylindrical shape and the fact that it was built in the mid-50s on the site of an old 18th century military bastion, known as the Pardaleras Fort.

The entire cultural and artistic framework of this museum is configured around this building with four cylindrical floors, from which three very different zones were planned: a building for the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, another for administrative use and a large garden area.

It is worth visiting this place, transformed from a place of repression to one of freedom and colour, which shows how this city of Extremadura has opened up to the spirit of renewal. Another example of this are the over one thousand works that make up the collection kept at MEIAC, belonging to artists as renowned as Luis Buñuel, Equipo 57, Daniel Canogar, Miquel Navaro, Eduardo Naranjo, Ouka Leele, Juan Barjola and Pablo Palazuelo, amongst many other well-known names.
