Just 4 kilometres from Mérida city centre lies Proserpina Reservoir, which dates back to Roman times and is the largest of its kind in the entire Mediterranean area. This reservoir also forms part of the archaeological ensemble of Mérida, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known locally as "the pond".
Over the centuries, it has been remodelled several times, but it is still used for bathing today. It has a man-made beach, outdoor cafés and a water museum. -
