if you come to the Puerto Peña rupicolous fauna Interpretation Centre you will be given all the information you need to enjoy these surroundings to the full.
This SPA and SCI includes the lands that form part of the Sierra de los Golondros and Sierra de Valdecaballeros mountains, part of the river Guadalupejo and the northern slopes of the Sierra de los Golondrinos, amongst other spaces and municipalities in the north-east of Badajoz province.
The fauna that inhabit this SPA rich in broom and Mediterranean scrubland are mainly linked to the aquatic medium. Some of the more remarkable animals present here are Mediterranean turtles, otters and several types of fish - bogas (Leporius obtusidens), calandinos (Squalius alburnoides) etc. And if you are lucky, you will spot the Iberian lynx in its natural habitat.
The Puerto Peña-Los Golondrinos SPA and SCI is also remarkable as an internationally important refuge for Mehely's horseshoe bats and Geoffroy's bats, two species that come to this area to reproduce.
