  • The presence of the Iberian lynx makes this a unique Special Protection Area.

Watered by the Erjas river, the Río Tajo Internacional Y Riberos Special Protection Area for Birds lies in the northwest of Cáceres province and even crosses into Portugal along the Tagus river as well as one of its tributaries, the Sever, which runs through the Sierra de San Pedro fed by the Salor river, and the rivers Carvajo, Aurela and Aburrel.

The area is teeming with holm oaks, heather, broom and bushes and there are extensive rocky areas that provide an important habitat for local wildlife.

The many rivers that run through the area are home to a wide variety of fish, such as Iberian barbel, Iberian nase, Squalius alburnoides, linnet and loach. The area is also home to six types of bats, though the most treasured inhabitant is undoubtedly the rare Iberian lynx.
