Roman bridge on the Guadiana River
In the city of Mérida, on one of the most shallow sections of the Guadiana River, we find a bridge built in the 1st century, at the same time as the foundation of Emerita Augusta. Thanks to its large size and features it is one of the most important Roman bridges in the Peninsula.

In the city of Mérida, on one of the most shallow sections of the Guadiana River, we find a bridge built in the 1st century, at the same time as the foundation of Emerita Augusta. Thanks to its large size and features it is one of the most important Roman bridges in the Peninsula.
This Roman bridge was built on the Guadiana River, and was very important during the foundation of Emerita Augusta. It provided an essential connection with Lusitania and the rest of cities of the Empire.
It is one of the most important structures built in the Peninsula during that time, mainly because of its size. Today it is 792 metres long and is supported by 60 arches.
Built in the time of Augustus (1st century BC), it still has traces of its original shape, but as it is an important connection it has been altered many times over the centuries.
The best-preserved part of its original structure can be found next to the first ramp, made up of ten arches, with a concrete core and built with river materials. -
