  • This fortification in Cáceres with views of the Sierra de Gata landscapes was built on the remains of a Moslem building. of which some traces remain.

In the province of Cáceres in the town from which it takes its name. Santibáñez el Alto Castle is a fortification which was rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries over the remains of a Moslem building. The first to take charge of the rebuilding work were the Knights Templar of the Order of Pereiro, followed by those of the Order of Alcántara.

The original structure stills preserves a part of the high tower which presided over this castle from which Sierra de Gata and the Moorish towers of Trevejo and Eljas can be seen as well as another in the same style which was used as a watchtower in case of possible attacks. The wealth of history which accompanies this defence fortress has led to its declaration as a Spanish cultural heritage site.
