The Roman Theatre of Mérida is a place where comedies and tragedies have been performed since the times of Emperor Augustus. And since 2016, it is also the place where the Stone & Music festival is held, lighting up the evenings of late August and early September.
Over only a few editions, the Stone & Music festival has made itself a name in the entertainment scene in Extremadura and has enhanced the image of Mérida inside and outside Spain. For decades, July and August in Mérida have become synonymous with the International Festival of Classical Theatre; however, the highlight of the end of August and the beginning of September are the concerts of national and international soloists and bands that the Stone & Music festival brings to the city. On the sumptuous stage of the Roman theatre, the landmark and most visited monument of the city, Greek and Latin texts, the protagonists of summer nights give way to music.
Artists such as Serrat, Alejandro Sanz, Raphael, Manolo García, Robe Iniesta, Scorpions, Il Divo, Dani Martín and Manuel Carrasco, among other, have performed at the Stone & Music festival, enchanting crowds of locals and visitors, some of whom travel from as far away as Portugal, France, United Kingdom or United States say organisers.
Few music festivals can boast a Roman theatre as a venue and offer the chance to dance, sing and have fun in an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
