Surrounded by mountains and lakes, this is an ideal place for hunting, fishing and water sports.
Talarrubias lies in the north-western part of the province of Badajoz, surrounded by Puerto Peña, Orellana and La Serena reservoirs.
Here you can go fishing for pike, carp and blackbass, go canoeing and do other water sports, as well as swim in freshwater. It is also a great place for birdwatching, because parts of the area belong to two ZEPAs (SPAs -EU Special Protection Area): Embalse de Orellana y Sierra de Pela and Puerto Peña-Sierra de los Golondrinos. Here black storks, Egyptian vultures, golden eagles, herons or great bustards can be spotted, among many other species.
The area is also a popular destination not only for hunting, but also for other outdoor activities such as climbing or hiking. The Centro de Interpretación de la Fauna Rupícola (Rock Fauna Visitor Information Centre) is located in Puerto Peña, where you can find out everything you require about the surrounding protected areas.
One of the most interesting monuments in Talarrubias is the 16th-century parish church of St. Catherine of Alexandria, boasting a curious mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Mudéjar styles. Also, worth mentioning is the Capilla del Carmen, a Baroque chapel with Rococo-style parts, and the old Franciscan monastery, today called Casa del Patio, with its whitewashed Baroque façade.
The hermitage of La Virgen Coronada, about 3 km from the town centre, is dedicated to the town’s patron saint. The 16th-century Gothic-Mudéjar-style hermitage of San Roque houses the statue of San Isidro Labrador.
If you visit Talarrubias in summer, you will be able to enjoy its festival in honour of La Virgen Coronada (Our Crowned Lady), held from 23rd to 27th August. And a few days before this, the unique “Fiesta de Los Rincones” takes place, during which various public and private spaces are opened as a venue for exhibitions, music, theatre and dance.
