Leaving war behind, there is nothing more peaceful than watching waterbirds in an incomparable setting.
We know that the region was traversed in Roman times by the Vía de la Plata (Silver Route), where we find Torremejía today, but there are no records of any human settlements at the time, except for the occasional patrician villas. The most likely history is that the town was founded by Diego García Torres y Mejía in 1480, although some experts argue it was founded by Gonzalo Mejía, Master of the Order of Santiago, in around 1370.
The Torres y Mejía family had a manor house built -the Palacio de los Mexía- of which part remains. The facade remains, as does the coat of arms and four "cipos", allegorical Roman tombstones, and the statue of a Roman in a toga.
The recently restored parish church was previously the manor house chapel. It is built in late-Baroque style, on a Latin-cross layout, with a tower unusually located over the chancel.
In the surrounding area, you can also visit the Arroyo Tripero and the Roman La Camasón reservoir.
