Every year, this Cáceres town in the district of La Vera holds Los Empalaos, an Extremadura Fiesta of Tourist Interest.
Valverde de la Vera dates back to the time of the Christian reconquest. Today, various monuments remain from this period, such as Los Condes de Nieva castle, which was built during the 13th and 14th century, and the parish church of Santa María de Fuentes Claras. The area's deep-rooted religious tradition is reflected in its popular fiestas, the most famous being Los Empalaos, declared an Extremadura Fiesta of Tourist Interest.
It is held at Easter, on Maundy Thursday, and its unique nature makes it a must-see event. During the event, penitents wearing a crown of thorns are tied to a beam made from chestnut wood. They also wear a shroud and have two swords strapped on their back. They then perform their own barefoot Via Crucis through the town.
Valverde de la Vera is also famous for other festivities, such as La Virgen de Fuentes Claras, San Roque and San Blas. -
