How to get to

  • This castle in the province of Badajoz began its life as a Moslem fortress, which with the passage of time became what it is today at the hands of the Lords of Villalba. A mixture of styles which has led to its declaration as one of Extremadura's historical and cultural heritage sites.

The Villalba de los Barros Castle in Badajoz was raised over a small Almohad fortress, built of rammed earth, a material used typically by the Arab builders. After the Christian reconquest of these lands, the castle became the property of various Lords of Villalba until 1394, when it fell under the control of the Suárez de Figueroa family.

The walled enclosure stands around a small central courtyard with four buttresses topped with horseshoe arches. It was rebuilt in the 15th century. This is easy to see as it was carried out in brick.

The keep is remarkable for its height over the rest of the enclosure. It is a rectangular structure with three floors and a barrel vault. The building materials used were masonry, dressed stone on the corners, and brick in the vaults. This fortress is a historical and cultural heritage site.
