This 6th-century Visigothic architectural site was used as a hostel and hospital by pilgrims and the poor.
In order to attend to the numerous pilgrims who came to Augusta Emerita (now Mérida) in the 6th century to visit the tomb of the martyr Saint Eulalia, a Xenodochium was built on the outskirts of the town - a hostel for pilgrims and hospital for poor locals who were sick.
This site is a 6th-century Visigothic monument founded by Bishop Masona. Its structure is very simple, as it is comprised of a central nave which served as a basilica and two side wings, in turn comprised of a central courtyard with porticoes and a nave on either side.
