This Special Protection Area for Birds, located between Cáceres and Badajoz, is a habitat for aquatic birdlife of international importance.
It lies within an area of wetlands and rice paddies in Las Vegas Altas del Guadiana, encompassing various towns and villages such as Palazuelo, Puebla de Alcollarín and Los Guadalperales.
This natural beauty spot of international importance is renowned for its wetlands and for being home to a wide variety of water birds, which congregate around the Alcollarín, Ruecas and Gargáligas rivers.
The waters of this Special Protection Area for Birds, named after the crops and pastureland dominated by holm oaks, are a natural habitat for otters and Mediterranean pond terrapins, as well as large populations of birds, including colonies of collared pratincoles and cattle egrets, along with black-tailed godwits and common cranes. -
