  • Its rich biodiversity led to the declaration of Llanos de Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes SPA as an Area of Regional Interest, too. The dragon-shaped reservoir that occupies its central part also had a role to play in this.

The Llanos de Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes SPA is characterised by gently-sloping plains and stretches from Brozas to Trujillo. The waters of this curious dragon-shaped reservoir which occupies the centre of the Special Protection Area come from the river Guadiloba, and provide a habitat for different species of invertebrates like the stag beetle; reptiles such as the Mediterranean turtle, and up to five species of fish.

As a result of this wealth of fauna, this protected space was declared an Area of Regional Interest. No wonder then that the Llanos de Cáceres and Sierra de Fuentes SPA includes the best areas for birds, with boundaries formed by the banks of the river Tamuja and the river Almonte. Its more than 700,000 hectares are distributed amongst the municipalities of Cáceres, Sierra de Fuentes, Torreorgaz, Torquemada, Torremocha and Aldea del Cano.
