    The Río Y Pinares Del Tiétar Special Protection Area for Birds is one of the largest of its kind. Located in the northwest of the province of Cáceres, it encompasses many of La Vera district's towns and villages. The area is also crossed by many waterways, including the Tiétar river, Garganta de Pasarón, Arroyo de las Navas, Arroyo del Fresno, Garganta de Jaranda, Arroyo de Santa María, Arroyo Barreros, Arroyo Boquillas and Arroyo de Alcanizo.

    Such diverse habitats attract a wide variety of wildlife to this protected area. The mammals that inhabit the area include two endangered species: the Pyrenean desman and the Cabrera's vole. It is also easy to find various kinds of reptiles, such as European pond turtles, Mediterranean pond terrapins and water lizards. The many species of fish include Iberian barbel, Iberian nase, Squalius alburnoides, linnet and loach.

    And if your a bird lover, don't miss the chance to see the black storks that live in this protected area, as well as Egyptian vultures, the area's most numerous birds of prey.
