A biosphere reserve the whole family will enjoy

This protected area offers activities, culture and gastronomy to spend a few unforgettable days as a family.

In the south west of the province of Cáceres, lies one of the best prepared natural spaces for enjoying a fantastic family holiday practically on the banks of the river Tagus: The International Tagus Cross-border Biosphere Reserve.

In this natural space nature, culture, history and gastronomy join forces around 14 municipalities where you can find a wide range of activities for the whole family.

One of the best ways of discovering the reserve to the full is to embark on one of the proposed routes. If you want to go on foot, the younger members of the family are sure to love experiencing the re-enactment of the smuggling that used to take place in La Raya, between Extremadura and Portugal.

Another route that may be interesting for our little adventurers is the Megalithic Route, which starts in Valencia de Alcántara. But without a doubt the high point of the trip for children will be the arrival at the dolmen and menhir sites in the area, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by UNESCO.

Another original option is to go on an ornithological route on the water. And how does one do that? By spending an enjoyable day on board a motorboat that will take you to the "Los Canchos de Ramiro" SPA. Black storks, vultures and Egyptian vultures are some of the bird species you can espy here.

Practising water sport, trekking along one of the routes on horseback that run along the paths of the Tagus, or listening to the sound of bellowing of the stags on a 4x4 are some more of the many activities available in the area.

If you prefer a more cultural experience, get away to discover and enjoy the Classical Theatre Festival of Alcántara, which is held in early August and includes many parallel activities as well as the competition itself. At night you can enjoy the performances of the classical works in the Carlos V Gallery of the Conventual de San Benito, and during the day you can hear poetry recitals, stories and legends retold for both children and adults, or enjoy parades, workshops for children, gastronomy shows, exhibitions, guided tours… An unforgettable few days.
